Monarch Butterfly

First of all there are 4 stages to the life of a butterfly

monarch Egg -- monarch Larva or caterpillar

monarch chrysalis or pupa -- monarch butterfly

The monarch butterfly that is pictured above is a female - the male looks the same except that it has a black spot in the lower part of the wing on both sides. The gold band around the pupa looks like real gold but is not. A monarch butterfly can live up to 8 months or more. The caterpillar will jerk when confronted by a loud noise. Every year the monarch migrates from southern canada to spend the winter in mexico and then back again in the spring.
