black Swallowtail Butterfly
First of all there are 4 stages to the life of a butterfly
Black tail Egg -- black tail Larva or caterpillar
black tail chrysalis or pupa -- black tail butterfly
the black swallowtail caterpillar will warn off predators with their scent horns which send out a stinky odor into the air when provoked. (see picture) the caterpillar is considered a garden pest because it eats parsley and dill which are spices. the butterfly's black color helps to keep it warm. the butterflies live from 2 - 3 weeks when nectar plants are abundant. it is 1 of florida's 10 swallowtail butterflies which is more then any other state.
